It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since My Chemical Romance reunited onstage for their surprise return show in 2019. Since then, fans have been hoping that the band will release new music. Earlier this month, however, Frank Iero may have spilled that My Chemical Romance are actually working on their next album.
During a Premier Guitar interview, Iero might have accidentally slipped up that MCR are back in the studio with producer Rob Cavallo who produced both The Black Parade and Danger Days. Now, some fans think Gerard Way may have further confirmed this new album theory during a recent chat he had with The Umbrella Academy star Aidan Gallagher.

Over the weekend, Gallagher took a break from filming season 3 of The Umbrella Academy to post a brief interview with Way on his YouTube channel. The video is the first part of a recent conversation between Gallagher and The Umbrella Academy co-creator. Along with acting in the Netflix series, Gallagher is also a musician and has put various singles over the years including “For You,” “I Love You” and, more recently “4th Of July.”
During the discussion, the duo talks in-depth about recording studio setups and equipment. As well, Gallagher asks Way if he has seen the new Bee Gees documentary called The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, which is streaming on Hulu.
Although Way says he hasn’t seen the documentary yet, he does confess Cavallo recently visited the studio Way shares with engineer Doug McKean. McKean was the engineer on various My Chemical Romance projects including The Black Parade and Danger Days.
Additionally, McKean has worked on Way’s solo music over the years including producing “Dasher,” Way’s 2018 holiday collab with the Regrettes vocalist Lydia Night and 2018’s “Getting Down The Germs” with Ray Toro. He also produced Way’s debut solo album Hesitant Alien.
This anecdote from Way has caused some fans to believe MCR are back in the studio working on MCR5 with Cavallo.

“Doug was actually mentioning that he had seen it,” Way told Gallagher. “Or maybe Rob had seen it? Rob Cavallo was here to check out some synthesizers, [and] I think he mentioned it. It sounds very good.”

This MCR5 theory emerged again earlier this month when Iero sat down with Premier Guitar to talk about his guitar collection, pedalboards and various other gear he’s accumulated over the years. Throughout the conversation, some fans noticed Iero made a few slip-ups they think hint at a new My Chemical Romance album.
In the interview, Iero spends a lot of time talking about his pedalboard setups. In particular, he mentions one board he used for the Thursday livestreams he was part of last year. As well, he seemingly begins to say that he also used the setup to record My Chemical Romance music. However, he manages to catch himself before saying too much.

“Yeah, I did like two Thursday livestreams on this and a couple of M—and some recording stuff,” Iero says during the interview.

Elsewhere, Iero briefly opens up about the equipment he used while working with Cavallo over the years. During the interview, Iero mentions that My Chemical Romance worked with Cavallo on their “last three” records. However, Cavallo only produced The Black Parade and Danger Days. Thursday vocalist Geoff Rickly produced their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love while Howard Benson produced Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.
It’s doesn’t take long for Iero to realize what he’s said. Soon after, he corrects himself by saying that Cavallo has actually only worked on MCR’s “last two” records. However, some fans are convinced this blunder is evidence that My Chemical Romance are back in the studio with Cavallo.

“I used [a Marshall Super Lead amplifier] with Rob Cavallo on the last three My Chem records or the last two My Chem records rather,” Iero says during the Premier Guitar interview.

Back in January, Iero actually hinted he is currently working on multiple projects. During an interview with Louder, he confirmed that Frank Iero And The Future Violents‘ latest EP Heaven Is A Place, This Is A Place features their last recordings. However, he also cryptically revealed he has some other exciting plans in the works.

“There’s nothing I can break for you right now,” he told Louder. “I will say this though, at the moment I’m working on between four and five different projects, which is awesome but it’s all spec.”
Although it’s unknown if Iero was talking about MCR along with other projects, the latest comments from both him and Way have some fans convinced a new album is in the works.
3 Rob Cavallo albums? Where’s the third Frank? Black Parade, Danger Days… what’s that third? Also what about that pedalboard you used for, “Some Thursday stuff and some MMM… um some recordings”…

Gerard said Rob Cavallo was at his studio not long ago, corroborating that Frank slip up where he said Rob produced the last 3 my chem records instead of just the two he actually did so far.

More on My Chemical Romance
Earlier this month, My Chemical Romance sent fans into another theory frenzy when they dropped new merch with Hot Topic. Their latest T-shirts feature a slew of new symbols and imagery that some fans think may be hinting at an upcoming announcement. Shortly after the merch launched at Hot Topic, however, it disappeared from the retailer’s website.
According to the MCR Reddit thread, Hot Topic’s Customer Care said that the merch disappeared online because it sold out quickly. However, some of the items may be available at local locations. As well, it’s unknown if the items will be restocked on Hot Topic’s website in the future.
“Unfortunately, the new merch of My Chemical Romance went out of stock fast, we do not have an estimated time of arrival for these items,” Hot Topic’s Customer Care says in an email. “Since we are not always certain if the items will be coming back online, you are welcome to check inventory at your local store.”
Additionally, one of My Chemical Romance’s U.K. shows was officially postponed. MCR were set to kick off their rescheduled return tour on June 15 in St. Austell, England. However, this Eden Sessions show has now been postponed for the second time. Currently, the Eden Project has not announced a new rescheduled date. As it stands, My Chemical Romance’s return is set to begin June 17 in Milton Keynes. This date was originally the first show the band announced after their reunion concert in Los Angeles.
