Last Tuesday, grindcore/death metal killers Exhumed posted the music video for “Drained of Color,” the first single off their forthcoming album To The Dead.
This week, Exhumed frontman Matt Harvey gives the internet an up close look at how he plays the song in the latest “Slaythrough” video on the band’s YouTube page. As you can see from watching the video below, the nearly 10 minute clip starts with just a straight playthrough of the song before going more in-depth with the song’s various sections.
According to Harvey, writing guitar parts for this new record mostly took place without having a guitar in hand, instead opting for a more app-based approach.
“I actually wrote most of the songs in Guitar Pro without having my hands on a guitar because I have a lot of muscle memory from playing this style of music for a long time so my hands go to the same shapes over and over and I’m trying to get out of those patterns.
The song itself was just something that I would like, hum a riff and then work it out in Guitar Pro, which would [came about] by humming the riff, which led to some different progressions that I normally wouldn’t do.”
Harvey also said that the song came about after Exhumed finished its tour with Gatecreeper and Necrot, finding inspiration in how those bands “add an extra beat at the end of their riffs.”
