The Mark Release New Single

We’ve all had this thought before. We’re sitting someplace, maybe on a train, in a restaurant, just out and about. Someone catches our eye, whether their with someone or not is irrelevant, but something about them strikes us. It’s unexplainable, but it’s innocent. It’s love. The mind begins to wonder what could be, do you take the plunge and speak to them? Is it love at first sight? Will they reciprocate? Or is this all just a way to ignore the love you’ve been denying from others or even yourself?

These are dense questions for even a heart throbbing rock song to ask, but such is the case of The Mark’s latest song “Wondrous.” Taking its title from the chorus line “Love is Wondrous” , that level of transparency is front and center in this fantastic song that will remain a highlight for me this year in the current state of alt rock. The Mark have been carving out a nice niche for themselves for a while now, The Netherlands based band working furiously between touring and putting out banger after banger, and now they’ve graced again. The fascinating thing about this track was that the composition originally was created independently of any song lyrics and even the final instruments were added in post.

It’s an almost Frankenstein of a song but the stitching is damn near invisible with how well everything syncs up together. By this point, the group operate almost like a hive mind, sonically, able to convey a gamut of emotions with even minimalist lyrics like what’s on display here. It’s not a particularly complex song, and if you’ve heard plenty of romance songs of many varieties, you know what to expect, but it’s more about the presentation I feel, than what you might’ve heard before. It’s the type of song that’s a vague glimpse into the mind of a lead singer who belts lines like “Love is Wondrous” and “If you would only get to know me.”

It feels like it’s cut from one’s mind-movie about ones-self. If I have any major complaint about the song, it’s that I wanted it to go even longer so I could enjoy more of the lyrics that do take a comfortable backseat to the sheer talent of the back track. It feels like it’s a kicking beat that could be a part of its own concept album.

A sound cinematic in scope with a lot of special thanks to the drum work and the tracks overall glossy production that’s become a staple of the band for the past few years. Music is one of the best ways to get swept up in emotions, and sometimes it sneaks up on you, as is the case with the subject of this song. You too will want to get swept up with every listen, of which I recommend many. With the production being as tight as it is, you’ll notice things like reverb and even small instruments act as neat little details that only enhance a thrilling and romantic experience.
