Floyd Fuji Releases New EP ‘Sunspots’

Emerging singer/songwriter Floyd Fuji has released his new EP, Sunspots.

The five-track project includes the previously shared songs “Tongue Tied,” “Breadwinner” featuring Topaz Jones and “Inside.”

Of his new EP, Fuji explains, “Sunspots is a summer journey/love letter to myself and the people around me. It’s about finding the balance between the sun and the shade in my life. I had to look in the mirror and ask myself everyday, ‘What do you want? How do you feel?’”

On the penultimate track, “End of Days,” Fuji pens a sweet note to his significant other that professes his everlasting love.

“Sometimes I feel like the Earth just slips under my feet / It is a feeling I know I can’t ever leave / But believe me when I say (yeah) / Every night I say a little prayer for you / If no one knows, you know that I care for you / If the world go astray, I’ll love you until the end of days,” Fuji sings on the beautiful tune.

Speaking on “End of Days,” Fuji says, “In relationships, some people refer to the phrase ‘putting in the work.’ I see it as ‘building a world.’ Either way, world, or work; when it all comes crashing down, you’re devasted. Still somehow, even with there being feelings of an end approaching, I found hope in the feeling of knowing how words manifest in the worlds we make. Those words we prayed kept our world together, even though we chose to leave it.”

“When U Coming Home” is a silky number that hears Fuji’s weightless falsetto fluttering over a guitar-driven production.

He sings in the second verse, “Well I wanna know / What it’ll take to bring you back babe / Wanna know if it’s him or it’s me / Or if you gone leave me lonely / Or be beside me in the morning / Please don’t leave me waiting / I know I seem impatient / I’ve just been waiting so long / Writing this song / Waiting for you to come home.”

The song could come across as a love letter to an ex, but for Fuji, it’s a letter to himself. “This song is a letter to myself to remind me to come back to myself and reel it all back in,” he explains. “This music thing can be real people pleasing. I always pray that God can remind me that he’s got me and will keep me on the right path. I wrote this song in my childhood bedroom when going home to visit family during the pandemic. Whenever I go back home and that room, I feel so enlightened. Just one person. A lot of emotions into this song.”

Sunspots is the follow-up to Fuji’s debut EP, Black Pontiac, which was released in October 2020. The project was dedicated to Fuji’s late grandmother. “I was about four or five years old, and was leaving the YMCA after swimming and I carved my name into my grandmother’s brand new all black Pontiac. My parents grilled into me but, according to my parents, my grandmother wasn’t upset,” Fuji told The Hidden Hits.

“My grandmother passed away two years ago, but this story really stuck with me. Especially the music she played in her car. A lot of timeless soul classics. Those songs really inspired my music and taste, and my grandmother always encouraged my artistry. So I wanted to dedicate the project to her.

Fuji will support pop-soul band Hablot Brown on their headlining North American tour, which begins Oct. 20 in Austin, Texas. The tour will conclude Nov. 22 in Denver, Colorado. Fuji appears on their self-titled debut album on “Electric.” The album also includes a feature from Leven Kali.
