‘Janet Jackson: Family First’ Documentary in the Works

A&E Networks and Lifetime have announced a sequel to Janet Jackson’s hit self-titled documentary, which debuted in 2022.

Janet Jackson: Family First is an intimate and candid look at Janet preparing for and on the road for her upcoming headlining Together Again Tour.

As cited in the press materials, the tour will celebrate “Janet Jackson’s 50th anniversary in entertainment and spotlight the milestones for two of Jackson’s most critically acclaimed albums – 25 years of The Velvet Rope, and 30 years of janet.”

“I was touched by the love and support from the wonderful fans who enjoyed the documentary last year,” says Janet. “I am excited to continue to share my story, and welcome fans into my life and the Together Again tour. Thank you for your never-ending support, and I hope you enjoy the next chapter.”

The documentary is also a family affair. In it, Janet teams with her brother Randy Jackson (who co-executive produced Janet Jackson) to “reunite the family band after 40 years since their last performance.”

“In this next chapter in the documentary, Janet and I are thrilled to welcome viewers on the road with us as we embark on the Together Again tour, celebrating the milestone of 50 years of Janet’s career with fans across the country. We look forward to the continued partnership with Lifetime and A&E, and to sharing our family with viewers,” Randy adds.

Janet again enlists Ben Hirsch as director and Rick Murray and Brie Miranda Bryant as executive producers. Janet and Randy also serve as executive producers for the new doc.

Janet Jackson: Family First has yet to be given an official release date. It is currently being filmed, according to press assets.

Last winter, Janet’s first feature documentary, Janet Jackson, debuted on A&E Networks and Lifetime to rave reviews. It averaged 15.7 total viewers, making it the best non-fiction debut since The Last Dance, which premiered on ESPN and ESPN2 in 2020.

Janet Jackson was nominated for Best Music Documentary at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards. The award ultimately went to OLIVIA RODRIGO: driving home 2 u (a SOUR film).

Janet is gearing up for her Together Again Tour. The North American trek kicks off Apr. 14 in Hollywood, Florida. Support for the tour comes from rap phenomenon Ludacris, who will appear at all tour stops until it wraps on June 21 in Seattle, Washington.

Apart from collecting nearly a dozen new RIAA awards, Janet celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Velvet Rope by releasing a special deluxe edition.

Janet is still due a new album. Black Diamond, the follow-up to 2015’s Unbreakable, was teased in early 2020.

Of the album, Janet said in 2020, “Black Diamonds are the toughest of all the diamonds, the hardest to cute. I see that as the hardest to hurt or destroy. There is a lot that I have endured. I see myself as a Black Diamond in its purest form.”

Black Diamond is among Rated R&B’s most anticipated R&B albums to be released this year.
