From Symphony to Stage: The Artistic Journey of Sami Ilmola

Turku, Varsinais-Suomi, Finland — “Gold” by Sami Ilmola (Music, Lyrics & Violin by Sami Ilmola)

This song is a reminder that you don’t have to label yourself according to the categories society forces upon you. It’s a message that simply being who you are is enough. “Gold” is meant to give strength and encouragement to anyone who feels bullied, marginalized, or discriminated against. At the end of the song, there’s also a heartfelt “thank you” for those who have offered support, even from a distance.

“Your life is pure gold.”

Sami’s previous studio albums include Victory (2021), S.M.I. (2019), and Roller Coaster (2016). His debut album was a contender in the 2017 Grammy competition, making Sami one of the few artists whose self-produced debut reached the competition and was featured in Billboard magazine. To this day, Sami has handled every aspect of his music by himself, including playing the violin on all his albums.

In addition to being a musician, Ilmola is a music video director. He’s directed his own videos for Can’t Break Me Down (2017), On My Way (2020), Words (2021), and Victory (2023). His music videos are visually vibrant and dreamlike, filled with hidden meanings and color, where every small detail matters. Be sure to check out these unique pieces of pop art on Sami’s official website!

Sami was also mentioned during Madonna’s Celebration World Tour 2024. In the finale of the show, Madonna is heard saying, “…or they call me Sami!”

“I wanted to write an album that is optimistic, full of love, and filled with songs that give energy to people. The album blends urban rhythms and dancefloor beats with a modern twist, but most importantly, it brings joy. That’s what I love to do—make someone feel good.”

Sami’s previous studio albums are S.M.I. (2019) and Roller Coaster (2016). His debut album was a Grammy contender in 2017, making him one of the few artists whose self-produced album reached the competition and was featured in Billboard magazine. Sami plays the violin on all his albums, which he writes and produces himself. Check out his full discography at www.samiilmola.com.

Sami Ilmola is also a talented music video director, known for his visually captivating videos like Can’t Break Me Down (2017), On My Way (2020), and Words (2021). The best part of his work, Sami says, is the ability to use creativity every day, drawing inspiration from art, music, movies, pop culture, and travel. For him, writing songs, creating music videos, and designing new products and artworks is a way of life: “If I can bring joy to someone through my work, then I’ve succeeded.”

Sami was born into a middle-class family and started studying music at the age of 7, beginning with violin lessons. After school, he would spend his afternoons with his grandmother before heading to a nearby city for his lessons. He played the violin for over 15 years, including five years in a symphony orchestra. Eventually, he realized his true passion was singing, so he began taking classical voice lessons. Sami now has over nine years of opera training, including studies at the prestigious Helsinki Conservatory of Music. His classical training has opened many doors for his future.

Recently, Sami has moved towards a more danceable sound, incorporating modern electronic beats into his compositions. His debut album Roller Coaster was released worldwide, became a Grammy contender in 2017, and is available on digital music platforms like iTunes and Amazon. All songs and lyrics on Roller Coaster were composed by Sami himself. The album was also featured in Billboard magazine’s “Class of 2017” Grammy contenders issue.

Following the success of Roller Coaster, Sami released a music video for its lead single Can’t Break Me Down. The video showcases Sami’s true artistic vision, offering the public something fresh and exciting. It can be found on platforms like YouTube, Dailymotion, and Vimeo.

Sami’s second album, S.M.I. (named after his initials), was released in 2019, showcasing a new musical sound. Since then, he has released music videos for the album, including On My Way in January 2020 and Words in March 2021.
