Tyrese has returned with his new single “Don’t Think You Ever Loved Me,” which features Lenny Kravitz and Le’Andria Johnson.
On the downcast ballad, a brokenhearted Tyrese reflects on a past relationship and wonders if his ex ever loved him in the first place since she was quick to leave when things got rocky.
Tyrese sings in the gut-wrenching chorus: “When things got rough, you chose to run / I don’t think you ever loved me / Not like you said you did / Wasted my time / You wouldn’t try / I don’t think you ever loved me / And that’s why you quit.”
“Don’t Think You Ever Loved Me” was produced by Brandon “B.A.M.” Hodge and written by Tyrese, Eric Dawkins, Davion Farris and Asalena Elliott.
The soul-stirring tune will appear on Tyrese’s forthcoming album, Beautiful Pain.
“I really wish this wasn’t my story. I really wish this wasn’t my song. I really wish this wasn’t my truth. But it is. #BeautifulPain After really thinking about scrapping this whole album and never releasing this song because it’s just too painful,” Tyrese wrote in an Instagram caption.
Tyrese says Beautiful Pain, a double album, was inspired by his three-year marriage. “I wish this #BeautifulPain album was everybody else’s but mine,” Tyrese wrote in an Instagram caption. “I hate that I’m not married anymore. I hate that I went through this unexpected painful divorce but there’s a lot of beauty in pain and while in therapy I’m discovering that every day.”
According to Tyrese, Beautiful Pain will release in late 2023.
Beautiful Pain will follow Tyrese’s 2015 album, Black Rose, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album included the Grammy-nominated single “Shame,” which spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart. It scored nods for Best R&B Song and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards.
