PJ Morton Compares Making Gospel Album Versus R&B Album

When it comes to music, PJ Morton knows no limits. The renaissance man has proven that he is able to succeed in multiple musical spaces. The New Orleans native won Best Gospel Album (Gospel According to PJ) at the 63rd Grammy Awards. It was his third consecutive Grammy win in three years.

Last year, he won Best R&B Song (“Say So”) and the year before that, he won Best Traditional R&B Performance (“How Deep Is Your Love”). It also marked his first Grammy win in the gospel field.

Following his victory last Sunday, Morton opened up about his experience recording a gospel album as opposed to an R&B album.

“This kind of gave that validation the way I feel about that. I’ve said for years that I’m not Clark Kent when I write an R&B song and Superman when I write gospel songs,” he told Rated R&B during a virtual press conference at the Grammys. “It’s really heart at the root of it. I think that’s why a lot of our R&B stars came from church because the soul of it is there regardless.”

He continued, “The approach is not much different for me as far as what I’m doing musically or what I’m trying to get across. Of course, lyrically I have to approach that and think of what I want to say. It’s more messages of inspiration, hope and love. That was the only different approach but it was just different conversations.”

Gospel According to PJ is packed with features, including his father Bishop Paul S. Morton, Kirk Franklin, The Clark Sisters, Smokie Norful, Yolanda Adams, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Travis Greene, Mary Mary, J Moss and more.
