Dawn Richard Shares New Song ‘Mornin | Streetlights’

Dawn Richard’s upcoming album Second Line is almost ready for total consumption. But before the timer sounds off on its April 30 due date, the fearless performer unleashes another early track titled “Mornin | Streetlights.”

The split track begins with a soundbite from a candid open-ended conversation Richard is having with her mother about her mother’s love life. Following her mother’s response, the tune leaves off in the wee hours where Richard finds herself indulging in another form of breakfast in bed with her man.

Soon after, Richard blinds herself with the “Streetlights.” In a press statement, she said this half “represents the future,” while she commented that “Mornin” is what “embodies tradition and soul.”

Richard also discussed what led to her decision to merge the two songs. “Structure and rules don’t exist in this type of love, so it was important for me to not only approach this song with a nontraditional structure and length, but also push the design of what a love song should sound like. ”

She continued, “I felt like the songs couldn’t be separate and needed to be together, so I created it as one song; the past and future can exist together within one record.”

“Mornin | Streetlights” follows the bubbly “Jacuzzi,” which also arrived with a music video that she described as a “digital stimulation test.” Before that, Richard shared two other songs, including “Pilot (a lude)” and “Bussifame.”

Richard’s follow-up album to 2019’s New Breed will be released under the Merge Records imprint. Richard signed to the North Carolina-based label earlier this year.
