DRAM Releases New Album ‘What Had Happened Was…’

DRAM (formerly known as Shelley FKA DRAM) has released his new album What Had Happened Was…via Waver Records.

It’s the follow-up to Shelley FKA DRAM, which was among Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2021 list.

What Had Happened Was… includes the previously shares tracks “Let Me See Your Phone” and the BJ the Chicago Kid-featured “PPL.”

The former is a devastating song that speaks to a careless lover’s deception, while “PPL” is an intoxicating soulful cut that evokes a feeling of betrayal.

Ahead of those tracks, DRAM shared “Wham” as the album’s lead single. The pillow-biting jam was co-produced by Spill Sinatra and Herothaproducer.

Now, DRAM has shared the official video directed by Jabriel Films.

What Had Happened Was… consists of other songs of anguish and disappointment that detail the state of a not-so-good relationship, including “Angry” and “Best That I Got.”

DRAM told The Fader, “WHHW… has been my personal therapy, and I hope it brings comfort to anyone who can relate. It encapsulates the mix of raw emotions that I’ve been dealing with on my own for some time now. It’s dark, it’s fun, it’s triumphantly sexy, but most importantly, it’s a classic.”

What Had Happened Was… features contributions from Tim Maxey, Tane Runo, Mike Mizzle, Alissia Benveniste, Gabe Niles, Oligee, 95leo and many more.

Noted earlier, What Had Happened Was… is the follow-up to last year’s Shelley FKA DRAM. His previous LP featured guest spots from H.E.R., Summer Walker, Erykah Badu and Watt.
