What is a choice you’ve made that sticks out to you that landed you where you are today in your career?
To record my first song. I was so hooked with the process that it launched everything. I did not fall into this career, it called to me that my time had come for a new adventure.
What is the strangest part of the music industry?
The lack of working together. Partly because musicians and songwriters never learned how to work as a team. If songwriters, bands, musicians understood how much better they would be to work together, I feel sure they would jump on board. Think about all of that amazing creativity all pushing towards the same goals. Their success would jump 10 fold I feel sure.
Is there something that you would change if you could about how the industry is run?
Oh wow, yes. I would eliminate auto tune. Auto tune has really turned young ears upside-down. Next, social media that allows you to post videos under 2 minutes. People are so used to 30 seconds of information, it’s hurt our ability to truly pay attention. To stop for 3 minutes and really listen. And third, stop putting musicians in a position that makes them believe they have to beg to be paid. Everyone benefits from having music on their playlists, or streaming services, or the radio. I watch so many artists begging people to listen to their new single, or buy tickets to their new show. Have we forgotten about the music?
What do you feel like you do seamlessly when it comes to your craft?
That is super hard to say because I feel like I am always learning, always trying to do better, always trying to practice more. I guess the only seamless thing I do is love what I do! Music, singing, songwriting, producing is constantly evolving, and I try every day to keep up! But, I do love trying.
What do you feel like you have to work on daily when it comes to your craft?
Singing and songwriting for sure! I always feel like I can do better, come up with a better lyric, a better melody, a better chord structure. And, the voice, well, it’s a muscle that you have to exercise every day if you want to keep it strong.
Is there a story where you thought you tripped up in your career but it turned out to be a beautiful surprise?
Well, yes, probably touring. When you tour, you make so many mistakes and spend so much money. After the first tour, I thought ‘What have I gotten into?’ But, when I reflect back, it really gave me an education that is unmatched in any music school. Learning how to adapt, put on a show, manage team members each and every day…well, it’s hard. And, you need to do it successfully, or the tour fails.
Name the most beautiful part of being an artist?
Making music!!! I am super super addicted. Being surrounded and talking about music all the time is a dream come true!
What touches your soul in particular when it comes to your music?
If my music or performance can touch anyone in a positive way, that warms my heart, or touches my soul.
How are you making your mark with your music?
I am not sure I have made my mark yet, but each day I keep trying! Practice makes perfect, so I keep at it, each and everyday.
Can you talk about your latest single? Can you talk about the origins of it?
Don’t Give Me No is a big departure from my typical house and deep house sounds using a moody, almost chilling effect. I recorded simpler vocals this time that speaks to lovers who light fire when they are together and are moving in the same direction. The remixes radio and club are by the infamous Bimbo Jones.
We shot the music video in the heart of Miami, Florida. Using a dark themed approach, it’s a story of one dancer who’s heart was broken.
