New York death metal is an interesting beast. The old-school bands were serving up crushing slam riffs, brutal grooves and a healthy dose of hardcore influence, creating a sound that was heavier, grittier and often far more bounce-oriented than what was happening elsewhere. At the same time, the scene never stayed confined to one formula.
