Nashville’s indie rock Pet Envy continues to forge a unique sound no matter the cost. Collaborating for the first time ever, Pet Envy teamed up with genre-defying Luthi front man Christian Luthi on the new instrumental track, “The Fountain”. The band, known for having their songs placed in Showtime’s Shameless, and having been in regular rotation on AAA station-of-the-year, WLRT, the new song “The Fountain” knocks it out of the park, cashing in on a memorable vibe.

Sensitive like the New Romantic’s era of synth, “The Fountain” draws from a deep well of emotive beats and rhythms. As the song progresses, so does the interwoven ranges, ducking and driving into blissful pools. The song, too, has moments where the downbeat creates a bit more of a moodier, darker tone. Not for long though, as the celebration of sounds, darts quickly back. This song has several layers and doesn’t let up on the changing vibrations and outcomes. I can only surmise that this song came to fruition because of relationship troubles and reflection. It exudes that uncertainty and acceptance all-in-one swoop.
Perhaps too, the idea of “The Fountain ” is that one is releasing their emotions. Let the floodgates open, let it all out, these tones and notes seem to emulate. It contains this wonderful back and forth – almost like a duet- where there’s a sensitive, luxurious side that then opens up to a flirtier, cavaliere vibe. The suaveness, the elegance brewed with a machismo beat is extraordinary. I found the eccentricities of the song to be its guiding force, and its power hour, if you will. When the song ends, it’s a replenished feeling. A good exhaustion. You feel different, you feel taller and wiser. I suppose this song might have an entirely different experience performed live, but for me, it felt intimate and introverted. I liked the weirdness of it all. I enjoyed reveling in the waters for a time; “The Fountain” inspired me in a way that only the 80s retro synth tones can do.
Maybe this is a new sound for Pet Envy. Collaborating for the first time seems to have opened the gates for a new sonic trek. I often wonder how much a band or artist is influenced by their environment, or the city in which they live. Nashville, especially Broadway street downtown, is beaded with neon lights galore – and “The Fountain” captures that raw energy. Those lights. Those sirens calling all the tourists and the locals out for a night on the town. Nashville, too, has a side to it that is sleepier, the lights go down and “The Fountain” finds its way to those off-the-beaten pathways, too. This song has it all and I gander that Pet Envy has some more artistry to explore, more creativity to shock and awe. The enhanced sounds are criminally good. If you’re not swept away by the sheer creativity of “The Fountain” you must be adverse to any likeable entertainment. Only a true cynic wouldn’t give it high marks.
