Calvyn Cass seems poised, determined, or both, to become the millennial version of Ziggy Stardust. The term, androgynous, has become something so syncretized and modified, it’s reached the point of being obsolete. Ironically, much like music, we now have a seemingly endless trope of compounded terms and subjugations, to define gender identity. Though, he exists in a modern climate, Calvyn Cass actually has a more classic sheen to his image. Where as others rely on bombast and spectacle to express their individuality, he does so with subtle confidence and even a hint of wisdom.

The newest single by Calvyn Cass, “Are You Out There,” is a blended piece of Dance music, that almost takes on an international flavor. Cass seemed determined to make a strong impression from the opening chords of this one, and for the most part, he accomplishes just that. One of Calvyn’s most notable, and quite frankly, admirable traits, is his insistence on pushing boundaries. Not only does he do this by simply embracing his own inner truth, but he goes out of his way to do so as a songwriter, as well. “Are You Out There,” feels and sounds like the beginning of Cass’s purest vision of his work.
Currently a Canadian citizen, Cass was once a resident of South Africa. His travels, far and wide, have all but certainly shaped his sound, which is evident on “Are You Out There.” Interestingly, the single has something of a Bossa Nova feel, and even a tropical aftertaste. The track starts off on a busy note, quite literally, and never really relents. Melodically, the tune is somewhat tortuous, but somehow manages to resemble cohesion.
In the video for “Are You Out There,” which is literally hot off the press, we see a visually captivating landscape. The scope and cinematography is quite similar to the film, Midsommar. Cass is the focal point of the entire video, displaying an almost ethereal like presence. The entire video, much like the aforementioned movie, takes place during the zenith of daylight. We are able to observe the camera presence that Cass possesses, but it’s his soul that really shines.
All in all, this is another strong effort from the increasingly enigmatic, Calvyn Cass. “Are You Out There,” is a song that has broad appeal, without consciously attempting to do so. There’s nothing particularly muddy, or problematic, with the final mix. While, radio ready is not an description that carries much weight, anymore, Calvyn Cass is mostly suited for primetime, so to speak. Much like, Lady Gaga, Cass is becoming a master of ambiguity and anticipation. Once you find yourself tuning into what he is doing, you will be fully invested into what he will do next. Cass is the type of artist who seems not only apt to undergo an eventual drastic transformation, but destined to. On his recent single, Calvyn Cass repeatedly asks the question, are you out there? The answer is that we are, and we’re listening.
