You recently released your song ‘Elaine Benes’! Will you tell us a bit about it?
BP: Absolutely! I’m a big fan of the tv show Seinfeld, and I wanted to make a Seinfeld song that took place in modern-day. So for this concept, both characters are in their 60s and Jerry Seinfeld is professing his pent-up love for Elaine Benes.
What was the song writing process for it?
BP: It was challenging and fun! I had to place myself in the shoes of Jerry, and factor his post-Seinfeld successes into the storyline, like his show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I wanted the song to have some serious undertones, while still driving home the humor of Seinfeld.
You also released the music video for the single. Can you tell us a bit about that and what that process was like?
BP: I edited the music video myself, using clips from the Seinfeld series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and the Curb Your Enthusiasm Seinfeld “Reunion.” The biggest challenge was finding clips that matched the specifics of the lyrics, especially the references to modern-day Jerry and Elaine. Finding the Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee episode with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Elaine) was crucial to the storyline coming together!
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
BP: I was really inspired by 90s hip hop as a kid. Rappers like Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, and Dr. Dre are responsible for my love of hip hop. And independent rappers like MC Lars and Esoteric showed me a very unique perspective of hip hop that differed from the mainstream. Outside of rap, I’ve been influenced by the likes of Beck and Girl Talk.
Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
BP: Either Eminem or Kanye! They’re both in my top 5 rap artists of all time, so those would be the ultimate dream collaborators.
Do you have a mantra or piece of advice you carry with you that you like to pass on to other musicians?
BP: Be on top of your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly goals by tracking them every day. Once you establish your daily/weekly goals, get a monthly calendar printout and tape it to your wall. Every day, write down the tasks you accomplished within the box of that day, and look back at the end of the week to see how you’re tracking. This keeps me on task!
Any other upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
BP: Yes! I’m creating an album for release in early 2022. I went away for 10 weeks in the spring and summer, staying at random Airbnbs on the west coast, while working remotely full-time for an NYC-based ad agency. I had all my music gear with me, and created this album throughout my travels. Each destination has a song on the album. I composed all the music and wrote/performed all the vocals. I’m very excited to share it with everyone!
