Exclusive Interview with Matt Freedman

Your music is really thoughtful. How long do you contemplate what the subject matter will be?

That’s incredibly kind, and I purposefully try to have a lot of emotion, thought and connection go into every song I write.. that’s so kind!  I typically try to write songs as a form of reflection or therapy.  So the introspection that goes into my work is always top of mind.. I’ll try to be very in tune with my senses when I’m inspired by something, what I’m seeing, tasting, touching, smelling, etc.  So that I can get a really deep, vivid image out to the listener who is consuming the song.  I think it makes for a more unique, and deeper connection between me and the listener.

Context is everything, do you make sure you are clear with your messaging? How do you do that?

I will try my best!  The best writers I know (Eric Church, Stapleton, Springsteen), have a remarkable way of putting you in their scene with them.  You can so deeply feel that landscape, what they are seeing, the sounds they are hearing, etc.  I try to mimic the writing styles of my icons to subtly bring the listener into my world when I write songs, and not sugar coat things. I love writing really raw, brutally honest songs about things I’m going through.. in hopes (prayers, frankly), that I’m not the only one going through that same thing.  As a writer, I strive for connection to the listener, and hope the music I put out creates a bond between me and that person, so you feel we’re just having a conversation.

What music has been worth the wait for as long as you’ve been working on it?

I’ve been writing and playing gigs for 15 years, it’s almost embarrassing to admit that I’m debuting my first album after all this time haha.  I’d say that everything I’m about to release has been worked on in some capacity for at least 2 years, some songs as long as 10.

Will your fans be surprised with what you have coming up next?

I have no doubt.  This new album will really take the listener on an emotional rollercoaster, from the bright sunny highs of songs like “Good Love” to the raw, honest and truthful songs like “FreeFall” and “Best Beers Yet”.

Who have you been in the mix with on your music?

At the heart of my music is a family of people in my orbit that have all been long time friends.  My bandmates, the co-writers and the production teams in Nashville have all been incredibly gracious, and I’ve always had major imposter syndrome workin with such talented people.

What are you daring yourself to do as you get further along in your music?

To do more stripped down acoustic videos. I am a junkie for acoustic singer songwriter performances, and in 2022 one of my major goals is to be one of the top producers of singer/songwriter content on the internet.

What are you daring yourself to do as you get further in your career?

I want to challenge myself to become more physically and mentally fit.  I’m an ex college football player, and as an old quarterback my body is pretty broken from old injuries, so I’d like to start taking better care of my body and mind as I develop further into my career.

How do you feel like your work is shaping your fans who are listening?

I truly just hope they get the sense that I’m trying to build a family.  My mantra in this business has always been “Family & Songs”, and they are words I live by in that order.  I hope they feel the sense of community, that my door is always open to ANYONE who wants to chat about the music.
