Hello! It is great to speak with you today!
Tell us about your latest project!
I just released my third Christian Country single “Thank God”. I am very excited about this song because I got to get in a group with 3 professional songwriters and write it in Nashville. This is a song that I can relate to and I know a lot of others can as well. It talks about life’s struggles and how we need God in our lives. We can’t do it alone. This song is being pushed on both Christian Country radio and Mainstream Country radio. It is my first song to be distributed through Sony/Orchard.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
I would have to say Vince Gill and Dwight Yoakam are two of my biggest musical influences because of their unique styles and amazing sounds.
Do you remember the first time you realized you wanted to pursue music as a career?
I’ve known that I’ve wanted to have a music career since a very young age. I was infatuated by bands and musical instruments when my father played in a local country band in the early 90’s and my great grandma played in church.
What has been one of your favorite or most surreal moments of your career so far?
I’ve been so blessed to have had many surreal moments in my career. Two moments that really stand out are meeting and getting to talk to the legendary Merle Haggard and opening for his son Ben Haggard and the legendary Kris Kristofferson at the Cascade Theater in Redding, CA.
Who are some of the artists currently inspiring you?
There are so many awesome new artists these days. Two that currently inspire me are Eric Church and Cody Johnson. I love their style and music.
What do you do when you have writer’s block or a creative block? Any go-to ways to shake yourself out of it?
Writer’s block can be tough. I didn’t realize what it was until a songwriter in Nashville told me about it. I’ve experienced it a few different times these past few years. I like to plug in my electric guitar and start playing country licks and trying different sounds. I play along to artist’s music like Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill and Brooks and Dunn to name a few. It helps me get reinspired to write songs and a lot of times I just start coming up with stuff.
Do you have a piece of advice that you would give someone just starting out in the music world?
I came into the music business knowing hardly anything being from a small town in California called Red Bluff. I have learned so much since I graduated college and started to pursue it full time. I would recommend going to school to study music at a young age. That is something I wish I would’ve done when I graduated high school. Berklee and Belmont are two great ones I hear. Co-writing with professional songwriters as much as possible is something I also recommend. Writing with anyone is helpful actually because you can learn something from anybody and you never know where a song might end up. Keep record of everything you write and make sure and register with any online music sites you can like BMI, Sound Exchange, Library of Congress and more.
What do you hope to see in the music world as the industry continues to evolve?
I hope to hear some new fast, rockin’ songs come out as the music industry evolves. I love that style and don’t seem to hear much of it on the radio these days. I miss some of those cool country and rock guitar parts and would like to hear some newer styles of that in the future.
Any upcoming projects you want us to know about?
I am excited about two upcoming projects. I will be recording a new Mainstream Country album in the winter/spring time at Edgewater Music Group in Houston, TX and hope to be releasing the full album in summer 2022. I have one song already finished for the album called “Outa Style” that I’m releasing as a single on February 4th, 2022. It was produced by Nate Coon (drummer for Aaron Watson) at Rosewood Studios in Tyler, TX.
I am also starting to work on my first full Christian Country album and am planning on recording it at Fun House Studios in Nashville, TN. I’ve had two Christian Country songs “What Would Jesus Do” and “That Ain’t My Church” hit #1 on different Christian Country charts so I can’t wait to get going on this project.
