Exclusive Interview with YoYo Nagase

Welcome Yoyo Nagase! Super excited to chat with you. We love so many of your recent releases – tell us more about your current single “daydreaming”. Why was this the next single?

Thanks so much for having me! Every day, I try to write a new song. Early last year, I started listening to the remixes of Aidan Allchin, a producer who went to the same high school as me. I loved his unique sound and started to write a song that matched his style to see if he would be interested.

When I sat down to write the song, I had trouble coming up with the topline. I was sitting in my home studio, and nothing special was coming to me. I decided to leave the house and sit at a small beach near my neighborhood where I love to write. I started humming and soon, a basic tune was born. I quickly took out my phone and recorded a voice memo. I went back to my home studio and started hashing out the details, and suddenly the song “daydreaming” was born.

I really like the project because “daydreaming” is always something I find myself doing. The project feels relevant to who I am. Additionally, when I released the single, I was exploring my hand at a number of different genres, and I loved how upbeat and high energy it was.

Do you have any plans for a video for the single?

That’s a great question! I have made a music video for a song I released recently called “rocket ship,” but I don’t have plans currently for “daydreaming”. I really love the music video creation process because it is very interesting to try to recreate visuals from my mind into a filmed scene. Nonetheless, I am now spending all my time in the studio writing more music and developing my sound. When my time opens up, I can’t wait to get back into making more music videos though!

What is on your musical bucket list for 2022?

The biggest item on my musical bucket list is to collaborate with more artists. I am currently working on a project that will have multiple Asian American artists telling their story about growing up Asian. I am really excited about this song because my identity and this community is important to me, and I can’t wait to hear what other artists have to say.

Tell us your favorite things about making music.

I love that moment in the studio where everything comes together. It’s incredible after so many hours of writing, singing, and producing, to hear the final project. For these kinds of special moments, I have to thank my incredible producer, Axel Hejlsberg. We have spent entire days in the recording studio, working endlessly. The process is just so fun, and it makes the final result that much more satisfying.
