Known for its castles, The Alps, Sigmund Freud, the setting for The Sound of Music and probably the late pop star Falco, Austria is a beautiful blend of historical culture and modern twists. The whimsical new pop-Europa track, “When the Sun Comes Out” from Austria’s ViennaCC further puts this European city on the map for contributions to pop culture. “When the Sun Comes Out” a tapestry of synth and off-kilter arrangements, dances to the beat of its own drum. Just like the artist behind the track, “When the Sun Comes Out” is surreal enough to be true.
ViennaCC, who took the name after registering the same internet domain name, comes from a varied business manager. He worked as a programmer, content manager, cost calculator and CE of an internet company. You get a sense of his calculating artistic brain in “When the Sun Comes Out” because of the arrangement’s rhythms. The sonic wavelengths are searching, seeking out a branch or the next step to take. The pieces keep building off the previous piece and so on. It does sound computerized and scientific in a way. In a lot of ways, though, it’s freeing and serendipitous. I think ViennaCC does a wonderful job of impressing upon the listener a wonderful balance of electricity and that magic you can only attain through art.
I’ve heard that same, audacious sound from bands like Orchestral Maneuvers in The Dark (OMD), Kraftwerk and Thomas Dolby. ViennaCC has a wickedly witty voice. He’s a bit austere and his personality shines through the stanzas. I like how he sounds like he’s having the time of his life. That happiness really pulls the listener through – and thus the whole point of the song, really, is to get up and enjoy the day. We have the ability to do that now – after a few years of feeling like the doors were locked and we were isolated. “When the Sun Comes Out” is a sound celebration. It’s a party to mark the end of the lockdowns. ViennaCC really triumphs because there is hope at the base of this voice and sewn into the music’s mix.
Little trinkets of light pepper their way into the music’s base, too. I loved the little sounds that come out of the blue in this song. They really keep you on your toes. With each spin, a new world sort of reveals itself. I felt like ViennaCC wrote this song as a love letter to his neighbors. He wanted to thank them for being there during the lockdown, during the pandemic when even a wave from the window across the street seemed to mean so much. That’s where my brain went with this song – it opened my world up to a warm feeling of community. I think it’s about family and I think it’s about appreciating the everyday things in life. Walking down the street. Seeing a friend. Or even just sitting on a park bench. ViennaCC has a wonderful hit on his hands – “When the Sun Comes Out” has a bright future and might just be the next big thing out of Austria.
