Trisha & Thara’s latest single “Too Late Again”

I needed this song. Trisha & Thara’s latest single “Too Late Again” is five-star modern pop with EDM influences rife during the chorus and sparkles with the ever-optimistic energy of youth. It’s not difficult to get caught up in this song’s percolating chorus and then carried away by the bright-eyed onrush of its refrain and you’ll be glad you did. It isn’t one of those pop music experiences where you feel vaguely guilty afterward for enjoying something so obviously devoid of substance.

There’s flash and substance alike in this song and the duo plays much more heavily to the latter. It’s no surprise. The sister duo began performing together in the Boston area and its surrounding environs. That’s serious enough for a sixteen and thirteen year old but the duo is pushing themselves even harder than that. They’ve taken production classes at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and what they’ve learned allowed them to start their recording career in the right way.

They record rough tracks at home, including the vocals, before sending their work off for further polishing. Producer Brad Young does an excellent job accentuating the sister’s obvious strengths without ever allowing the cut to sound overwrought. He presents everything in a forthright way, up front, and the single has a muscular sound.

He highlights the vocals appropriately. The sisters have similar voices, but there’s plenty of distinctions between the two. They do a superb job balancing the parts different vocalists take while weaving them into the musical arrangement with great finesse. It is a composition that places a high premium on dramatic shifts, and it is the sort of dynamism you hear in the best pop songs.

They orchestrate “Too Late Again” in peaks and valleys. Polished and sedate verses transition seamlessly into an emphatic chorus that will constitute the song’s peak. Trisha and Thara modulate their voices accordingly. Woodshedding your skills and honing your craft is necessary for any artist, musical or otherwise, but it’s equally necessary you possess the natural gifts for your chosen form. The sister’s talents manifest in different ways.

There’s no question that Trisha & Thara are born singers. They are also gifted interpreters who close the supposed distance between themselves, and the maturity needed to convey this song’s message. Only veteran singers are among those you’d expect to pull off “Too Late Again” with such off-handed ease, but the sisters do not disappoint. Like the finest performers, they make it sound easy.

It’s only their third single thus far. Expect more from the twosome before 2022 concludes because it is obvious, they are burning with the creative energy often distinguishing inspired newcomers from their less motivated counterparts. “Too Late Again” has an appealing mix of pop song strengths and a modern sound certain to play well on the radio, at home, in the car, or wherever. Let’s hope they maintain the momentum with a follow-up sometime soon because they are set to get better and better with each new release.
