The Brkn Interview

The Brkn is an alt pop band based out of Denver, CO.

With your latest music, what has inspired you to innovate differently?

For the latest two singles we really wanted to go for a sound that was completely us with minimal references. We just approached the sessions as if we had never heard any music before except for what we could make. We wanted to take chances and take risks. Coffee and Not The Same really set the tone for what we want to reach for with our new EP coming soon.

What tools do you use on a daily basis that apply to your music making?

Lots of stuff! I use Logic, Ableton, midi controllers, guitars, microphones, my iPhone, my MacBook, the list is endless! I do a lot of writing in coffee shops as well. Particularly the lyrics but sometimes the synths as well and midi stuff as well.

What do you like to do outside of music that helps the music making process?

I love finding chill coffee shops to hang out at and kind of let my mind wander. It helps me express myself for some reason and just opens my mind to new ideas. Other than that I just love to create experiences for myself that I can write about later. I also watch a ton of videos/documentaries on my favorite artists and producers.

What creative planning has to take place to prepare you to finally release your music?

It’s another long list! But mostly just getting the songs ready and sounding the way we want them. Then getting the cover art done the way we like it. We then present it to our distribution company who then uploads it on the World Wide Web for everyone to hear! Along with that goes multitude of promotional videos/posts on our social media as well as telling everybody we can personally to pre save the songs before they come out. Word of mouth helps a ton!

What are your main sources for industry news to keep you informed on everything that is going on in your industry?

Honestly we get a ton of info from talking to other artists we know as well as keeping up on social media. Our management company helps us out a ton with that also. There’s definitely a lot you can find out just by googling things too.

Give our readers some advice  about a time when you thought of a better way to do something in music?

I would say the best thing I ever did was learn how to use a DAW and record/produce my own demos. It changed the way I wrote music and expanded my abilities tenfold.
