Exclusive Interview with Jazz Musician Joey Berkley

How would you describe your musical style to a Jazz enthusiast?

Firmly rooted in the tradition of Coltrane, Miles and Monk. I incorporate these influences along with other musical styles such as classic r n’b and funk to create my own modern sound. As a result Michael Brecker has become an important musical role model for me.

Who were some of your early music influences that inspired your passion for composing?

That would have to be a very eclectic list made up of composers who also perform or bands producing original music , all covering many types of music: John Coltrane; Thelonius Monk; Michael Brecker;  Steps Ahead; Quincy Jones; EWF; The Spinners; Stevie Wonder

What would you like new listeners to take away from your musical works?

A committment to musical integrity and a pledge of excellence by all the musicians heard playing.

Describe the current Jazz music scene in your city of New York.

The jazz scene in NY is devoted to playing at the highest level with an intensity found only in NYC.  Overall, with traditional musical tastes.

The best concert you have ever attended?

Personally, the VSOP tour w/Sonny Rollins at the Beacon Theatre, NYC in the early ’80’s. Or first time I heard Tower of Power, Toronto in the late ’70’s. Recently JALC Orchestra with Chick Corea

Are you currently working on new music?

Yes I am recording a Suite consisting of 3 songs representing a turning point in my life and career

Is there a particular time in your life where turning to your music made a difference?

Yes!  Around the age 12 or 13 and entering HS. Honestly it saved me, and I haven’t stopped since.

How have you evolved as a musician/composer over the last 2 – 3 years during these challenging times?

By re-examining why I play, it has opened a door giving me permission to sound like me authentically. Realizing now, that so far I have allowed only a portion to show in a controlled way

If you could co-write with one of today’s biggest songwriters/composers, who would that be?

Today? Nobody. From back in the day? Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, AC Jobim, Wayne Shorter, Leonard Bernstein, Marvin Gaye

What are your future plans? What do you hope to accomplish?

To get better as a saxophonist and develop more depth as a composer. Also would love to have the opportunity to work with another artist who I respect.
