Welcome to our exclusive interview with Tracee Perrin! Tracee is a multifaceted artist who truly brings a unique sound. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to dive into her creative process, learn more about her and her art.
Could you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single? What themes or experiences influenced its creation?
Sure! My new single, Poison in the Water, was inspired by a relationship in my life that is very important to me but has also been very toxic and difficult at times. I think that when you love someone deeply it can be hard to separate your needs from theirs. It’s about being guilty of that and the emotional drain that follows.
How does this new single differ from your previous work, both musically and thematically?
Musically, I think this single has more depth and grit to it than things I’ve done in the past. The Producer on it, Alex Wong, likes to take a solid amount of time with each song he does and it always begins with a conversation about what the song means and what experience an artist wants to convey to the listener. I think it also helps that we recorded the bulk of it on a dark and stormy day in Nashville. I think that definitely added to the vibe.
What was the collaborative process like when creating this single?
Can you give us a sneak peek into the production and recording process of the single? Any memorable moments or challenges you encountered along the way?
With Alex, we usually grab coffee somewhere first and chat for a bit. Then, back at the studio, we would talk about the song and he would have me write words associated with the message and feeling of it on a chalkboard wall. These words influence the musicality, vibe and textures of the production. From there we would play around with tempo and how to approach the arrangement to keep the song moving forward in an impactful way. Before recording vocals, Alex has this physical warm up he does with a singer that, at first, I felt ridiculous doing but really do see the value in. It’s a very artist centered, holistic approach. I would say one of my biggest challenges is just getting over myself and being willing to take more risks in the studio, particularly when recording vocals. I think it’s important for a Producer to create a safe space for that and I think Alex does that beautifully.
With the release of this single, what message or emotion do you hope listeners take away from it?
I hope listeners find something relatable and honest in it. I hope, if they’ve experienced something similar, that they see themselves and feel heard.
You also have an album release on the horizon – what can you share with us about it?
Oh yes! My EP, The Clearing, is coming out on March 8th! It’s the first body of work I’ve released in almost 13 years so it’ a big milestone for me. I’m thrilled to be putting it out there. This EP really embodies where I am as a human and as a creative person right now and the perspective I’ve been able to gain on who I am, what I feel and what I want. I had the vision for this EP shortly after releasing my first one in 2012 and I am proud of myself for seeing it through when there were so many excuses I could have made to just not do it.
Looking beyond this release, what’s next for you?
Well, I have an EP release show in Nashville coming up on March 20th and then I think I’ll be really focused on expanding my audience beyond Nashville through playing live more shows and festivals perhaps. I also have some ideas growing for my next project so I’m back in writing mode and have a few collaborations in mind that I’m excited about.
A huge thank you to Tracee for sharing insights into her creative journey. Thank you so much for the opportunity!
