SEVENTEEN’s JEONGHAN & WONWOO Share Origins of “Last Night”: Exclusive

Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, SEVENTEEN subunit JEONGHAN & WONWOO break down “Last Night” from their new project, THIS MAN.

“Each combination of members from SEVENTEEN would sound different,” observes WONWOO, referring to the number of ways to split a 13-person K-pop group into teams of two. That in fact breaks down to 78 different possible duo combinations within SEVENTEEN — but for today, we’re focusing on JEONGHAN & WONWOO, who have released an album titled THIS MAN.

SEVENTEEN are no strangers to committing to a detailed, theatrical concept, and THIS MAN unfolds over the course of four chapters, chronicling an urban legend about a man who appears in people’s dreams. The lead single, “Last Night,” is a sticky, summery bop that the two members of the subunit say they associate with the depth of night. It’s as playful as it is sultry.

“I tried to take in how I perceived the music and express what I felt solely from the song,” JEONGHAN reveals.

“What the two of us can express is just naturally different from what we’re able to achieve as the full group,” WONWOO confirms. “I was just thinking about the vocal tone that fits this particular track.”

SEVENTEEN recently celebrated their ninth anniversary as a team, marking the occasion with their first compilation album, 17 Is Right Here. Despite their consistent output, the group doesn’t plan to slow down any time soon as we move further into 2024. “There’s a lot coming up for SEVENTEEN as a group,” JEONGHAN notes. “The ceremony where we’ll be appointed as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Youth, we’ll be playing Glastonbury, Lollapalooza Berlin, and a lot more. I hope you’re looking forward to it all.”
