Metallica’s Twitter Account Appears to Have Been Hacked by Crypto Scammers

Don’t worry, Metallica fans, the band didn’t suddenly become crypto scammers. Or, at least, it seems unlikely that they were supporting the crypto scam company. Metallica may have done some questionable cross-promotions in the past (the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack comes to mind) but, so far, it seems that they haven’t stooped to actually scamming their fans with crypto.

In a series of tweets that started around 8 p.m. EST yesterday — which have since been deleted, but caught the eye of Loudwire — the band’s hacked Twitter account promoted “a dynamic new token on the Solana blockchain poised to revolutionize how you experience events and shop online.” The tweets made a few other dubious claims about the cryptocurrency called METAL such as that Ticketmaster was involved with the currency as an official collaboration as was a crypto firm known as MoonPay.

MoonPay responded to the posts by warning their followers not to trust the tweets, pulling off a few decent Metallica puns in the process, tweeting:

“MoonPay Safety Alert

“If someone is offering you a $METAL token, they are not the master of puppets – they’re the master of scams!

“Keep your keys safe and ride the lightning responsibly!”

As stated earlier, the band has since deleted the tweets, leaving only a few retweets about the incident as the last evidence that anything strange had happened on the account.

Now we can all go back to letting bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Megadeth run their own crypto scams. That way Metallica can focus on things like trying to scam kids out of their V-Bucks by having an event in Fortnite. Honestly, that might be sketchier than crypto.

To see the real band and not a bunch of scammers, check out Metallica on the rest of the dates of their M72 tour:
