Award-winning singer and actress Andra Day will star in the Netflix horror film The Deliverance, which premieres Aug. 30 on the streaming service.
Inspired by a true story of possession, The Deliverance follows Ebony Jackson (played by Andra Day), a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons when she moves into a mysterious house for a fresh start.
The logline further reads, “But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.”
The Lee Daniels-directed film also stars Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, Tasha Smith, Miss Lawrence, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
The Deliverance is Day’s first major role since starring in 2021’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for portraying the jazz icon.
Day made history by becoming the second Black woman to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture since Whoopi Goldberg’s role as Celie in The Color Purple (1985).
Lee Daniels also directed The United States vs. Billie Holiday. In a 2021 interview with Rated R&B, Andra Day reflected on her Golden Globe nomination.
“I think about my cast: Lee [Daniels], Suzan-Lori Parks, Tasha Smith, and Tom Jones, and just how many people poured into me,” Day told Rated R&B.
“This was a gargantuan effort and a gargantuan leap of faith of incredible talent, present passionate people and beautiful Black people that made that happen. You’re seeing all of them perform, even in my performance.”
On May 10, Day released her third album, Cassandra (cherith), via Warner Records. Titled after Day’s birth name, Cassandra Batie, the album includes the singles “Where Do We Go,” “Probably,” and “Chasing.”
“Cassandra (cherith) is a journey through my soul, from a state of being already full rather than from a place of lack,” she explained. It’s an intimate reflection of my personal experiences and growth, presented through the language of music.”
Before The Deliverance premieres on Aug. 30, Andra Day will embark on her Cherith Tour, which begins Aug. 9 in Atlanta.
