Jorja Smith Befriends Herself on New Song ‘High’: Stream

Jorja Smith is learning to practice self-compassion on her new single, “High.”

The club-ready bop was produced by her longtime collaborator DAMEDAME*.

“I’ve had my lows / You weren’t always there for me / But time has shown / And I can love myself again / I always need my friends / But I need to find one in myself,” Smith sings.

Regarding her new single, Smith explains, “‘High’ is a song I wrote about finding a friend within myself, even through the lows, you have to find the highs.”

“High” arrives with a joyful video directed by Jorja Smith and Ivor Lawson-Adamah. The video features candid footage of Smith alongside fan-submitted clips of people having a good time.

“High” is Smith’s first single since releasing her sophomore album, falling or flying. The project, which included songs like “Little Things” and “Try Me,” was among Rated R&B’s 25 Best R&B Albums of 2023 list.

Falling or flying is a raw and honest meditation on life’s ups, downs, and in-betweens. It’s a powerful reminder that, whether or not we believe we have it all figured out, it’s the journey that makes life thrilling and meaningful. By the album’s end, it’ll leave you wondering if you’re falling or flying,” wrote Keithan Samuels.

In 2018, Smith released her debut album, Lost & Found, also featured on Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of that year. “By capturing the vulnerability and discovery in heartbreak, Lost & Found takes the listener through bouts of acceptance, uncertainty, and unrequited love,” wrote Danielle Brissett.

Smith is featured on Childish Gambino‘s new and final album, Bando Stone and The New World,” on “In The Night” with Amaarae.
