Nine Inch Nails Composes Score for Disney Movie ‘Tron: Ares’

In something that’s as equally surprising as it is not surprising at all, Nine Inch Nails has scored Tron: Ares, the third installment of the eyeful of a sci-fi franchise Tron. It’ll be the first film score credited to Nine Inch Nails specifically and you can watch all the laser Tron announcement shit during a clip of the presentation below.

Disney presented the news yesterday (August 9) at the D23 Expo event in Anaheim, CA. The film isn’t set to come out until October 2025, and the score will feature the only set of new songs slated to come out by Nine Inch Nails since they had some songs soundtracked by the show Ghost back in 2020.

Frontman Trent Reznor has done several scores before, many with Atticus Ross, Reznor’s long-film score collaborator and somewhat but not recent addition to the band. Their score repertoire includes Challengers from this year and that one Facebook movie The Social Network from 2010.

While the new movie will have Jared Leto playing a highly technical program Ares, who is sent from the virtual realm into the real world, the original Tron showed a young Jeff Bridges being the badass mutherfucker that he is. Leto will be joined by X-Files darling Gillian Anderson, along with that creepy kid Evan Peters, stiff-haired funny dude Hasan Minhaj, Greta Lee, Arturo Castro, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan.

Production started for the movie in January and directed by Joachim Rønning. It’s obviously a big fuckin honor to do this, and Rønning is surely grateful for the opportunity, and he expresses it in a statement about the upcoming film:

“I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. Tron: Ares‘ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
