K-pop girl group Weki Meki have officially announced their formal disbandment after seven years together.
The band’s label, Fantagio, announced the disbandment today (August 16) in a statement to South Korean news outlet Dispatch. The company wrote that Weki Meki was officially disbanded on August 8, coming two months after the girl group released their final single ‘CoinciDestiny’.
Fantiagio has also revealed that five of eight Weki Meki members have chosen not to renew their contracts with the agency. “We are currently in serious discussions with members Ji Su-yeon, Choi Yoo-jung and Kim Do-yeon so that the artists can make the best choice for themselves,” it added, as translated by Soompi.
“We would like to sincerely thank Elly, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy, who shone brightly as members of Weki Meki, and although their group activities have come to an end, we will do our utmost to help them move forward in the future as well,” Fantiagio said.
Released in June, ‘CoinciDestiny’ was described as Weki Meki’s “final goodbye” to fans. The song itself arrived after several years of inactivity from the girl group. Their previous release had been the November 2021 mini-album ‘I Am Me’ led by the single ‘Siesta’.
During their hiatus, member Choi Yoo-jung made her solo debut in September 2022 with ‘Sunflower’. Meanwhile, Elly participated in the 2023 Mnet reality TV series, Queendom Puzzle.
Weki Meki made their debut in August 2017, shortly after members Choi Yoo-jung and Kim Do-yeon concluded their activities with project girl group I.O.I. The pair had become part of the group through the first season of reality TV show Produce 101 alongside Chung Ha, Jeon Somi, Kim Se-jeong and more.
