“The Meaning of Now”: The New Album of Landry Riba Brings Listeners to Iceland

Canillo, Andorra —On October 1st, 2024, the fourth album by Landry Riba was released, titled *The Meaning of Now*, a reference to the imprint that each moment leaves on us. Sometimes very intense, sometimes more subtle, but always unique and unrepeatable. Each track of the album transports us to the exact moment it was composed, allowing us to relive the feelings and thoughts of those instances. Sharing these experiences with the audience was made possible during the album release concert, which took place on October 3rd, at the National Auditorium of Andorra.

Landry Riba composed this album in January 2022, during an artistic residency in the far west of Iceland, facing Greenland and at the foot of the Snæfellsnes glacier. Over 17 days of almost constant darkness and relentless storms, alone and in complete introspection, he wrote 10 pieces, 8 of which are included in the album.

The recording was carried out between Andorra and Badalona (Spain), depending on the technical needs of each moment, with the contribution of exceptional musicians and the technical and creative collaboration of Alex Gámez (Störung Studios – https://storung.com/en/studio/) as the project’s producer.

The album is available on vinyl (which also includes a CD version), released under the Andorran label SEMM (www.semmrecords.com), and is available on all online streaming platforms.

The release concert at the National Auditorium featured nearly all the musicians who participated in the recording process, allowing the essence of the project to come to life. On stage:

– Jordi Claret on cello (ONCA, Carles Benavent, OC del Vallès)

– Uixi Amargós on viola (Joan Manel Serrat)

– Roser Loscos on violin (Laura Andrés)

– Carlos Montfort on violin (Sílvia Pérez Cruz)

– Elisa Mas, Christopher Aguilar, and Marta Valero on vocals

– Landry Riba on electric bass, double bass, and acoustic guitar

This new work follows the same path as his previous albums and remains within the genre of “classically influenced contemporary music” featuring Nordic-inspired atmospheres and textures that invite introspection and reflection. In addition to the electric bass and classical strings, there is a notable presence of vintage analog synthesizers and nature recordings made in Iceland. The production used analog equipment whenever possible, with mixing and mastering done on a tape recorder.

ABOUT

Landry Riba is a skilled classically trained composer and a bass player who is based in the idyllic setting of Andorra, in the heart of the Pyrenean Mountains and near to 2000 meters asl. Living in a scenic paradise which is surrounded by pine forests and flowered fields during summer and a white snowy coat in winter, Landry is a wildlife trained veterinarian and a mountain guide, who has always been in contact with nature and mountains.

After several years as bass player in jazz, pop-rock and funk bands, Landry decided in 2014 to start a very personal project in the genre of “classically influenced contemporary music”, melding together field recordings, classical strings, bass lines and electronica.

True to his idiosyncratic and inspirational style, Landry Riba unveiled his first album, called “They were trapped in the dream of a dog…” which was recorded at Landry’s studio in Andorra, mixed and mastered at Sundlaugin Studio (home of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós) and self-released in 2014. Nine new pieces were recorded in 2015 giving birth to the artist’s sophomore album titled- “Tales from behind the mirror”, produced and mixed by Federico Albanese and mastered at Störung Studio by Alex Gàmez.

In December 2017 Landry delivered yet again with his 3rd album, “Mountain Songs”, a 5-tracks live composition and itinerant project, recorded by Pere Revert in several historical locations in Andorra, and mixed and mastered at Störung Studio by Alex Gàmez.

A ‘mountain humanist,’ Landry’s craft manifests hard work and perseverance, a deep curiosity for his environment, and a deep sense of sensitivity and respect for others. His works underscore Andorra as a mountain territory, unique and singular, and involves a series of talented local professionals. Independently composing and playing all his instruments except the classical string’s sections, Landry Riba has released his 4th album in October 2024.
