Hecojeni “Only In My Head”

Indie rock comes in all different forms and being independent is only part of it, but Hecojeni manage to combine the right stuff for a pleasant result that reaches back to the days when everyone went out and bought music and made mix tapes. Hecojeni weave an underlying funky groove through their music, with no polish and no nonsense about it, and an overall sense of punk and late 80s/early 90s club techno pop. “Only In My Mind” is a slinky danceable track without being too obvious about it, as they subtlety add laid back vocals over a catchy beat.

I could name a few obvious influences felt, but it would be a long list of examples from the past 30 years and beyond, reaching everyone from Kraftwerk to the Talking Heads and later influences from the 90s and early 2000’s. But even with that being the case they have their own brand of techno indie rock that could be considered funk with machines rather that heavy on guitar and drums, and the vocals come with great melodies to match. “Only In My Head” is a soothing solution to the current white noise in our heads and the loudness of the current cultures,

The production qualities of Hecojeni are likely indie sounding because it lends to the sort of music they play, so there’s no need for a polished sound, as it borders on industrial, but doesn’t go as far as to call themselves EDM, however, they do have what could be considered a slight EDM feel. “Only In My Mind” takes you through decades of various musicality without trying to change the musical landscape, but the minds of listeners in a post pandemic world, which is also some of what they aim at message-wise together as a musical unit.

“Only In My Mind” is a chill out and relax type of song, without boring the listener, Instead, they keep it interesting with beat tracking and soft trippy vocals over it, and you can’t help but be reminded of everyone from David Bowie to Genesis. The pace of the song is cleverly kept with a groove that won’t quit, as the lyrics carry on about what’s only in our minds, but if you’re interested in more where it comes from, not all of Hecojeni’s music is exactly alike, as some of their other tracks aren’t as progressive as “Only In My Mind.”
