Patti Smith has joined Substack. The singer-songwriter and author announced her upcoming subscription-based newsletter in a video on Instagram, in which she said the new weekly venture will contain original photos, essays on books and movies, and more. There will also be a paid subscription option that gives access to The Melting, a serial that Smith wrote over the past year in quarantine that she’s described as a “journal of [her] private pandemic.” Check out the announcement below and subscribe to Smith’s newsletter at Substack.

In an intro letter, Smith described the newsletter in further detail. “Through Substack I plan to form an inter-connective body of work for a responsive community,” she wrote. “Each week I will post my weekly ruminations, shards of poetry, music, and musings on whatever subject finds its way from thought to pen, news of the mind, pieces of this world, free to all.”

Earlier this month, Smith performed a private concert at the Brooklyn Museum as a thank-you to the institution’s employees. Last year, she was awarded the 2020 PEN Literary Service Award.
