DMX in Critical Condition After Drug Overdose

DMX remains in critical condition following a drug overdose.

The 50-year-old rapper was rushed to a hospital in White Plains, New York on Friday night (April 2) after suffering a heart attack triggered by the overdose, which occurred at his home around 11 p.m..

A family member of DMX’s tells TMZ that paramedics tried to resuscitate him for 30 minutes during which he was deprived of oxygen. The lack of oxygen severely impacted his brain.

As of Saturday night, he was said to be on life support and in “grave condition,” while one family member says the prognosis is “not looking good.” His children are reportedly flying in to see him.

Earlier in the day, a source told TMZ that he had “some brain activity,” while another source said he was in a “vegetative state.”

A rep for the Yonkers-bred MC, born Earl Simmons, released a statement on Saturday. “Last night Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home. At this time he remains in ICU in critical condition. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents yet another road he must conquer.”

The statement continued, “The Simmons Family appreciates the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt love, encouragement, support and prayers for Earl. Earl is someone whose life and music have been a source of inspiration and strength to so many people around the world. It is reassuring to see his fans return that same passion and energy to him during his time of need.”

DMX has had a long battle with drug abuse and has been to rehab several times. In early 2019, he was released from prison after serving a 12-month sentence for tax evasion. Later that year, he canceled a series of shows and checked himself into a rehabilitation center for substance abuse.

In the wake of his hospitalization, friends including Snoop Dogg, Chance the Rapper, and Missy Elliott took to social media to share prayers for the rap icon.
