R.I.P. Dark Man X.
DMX, born Earl Simmons, has passed on at the age of 50.
After a week of putting up a long fight, the rapper’s family has confirmed he passed away at New York’s White Plains Hospital on Friday (April 9) following a nearly a seven-dat coma.
“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.”, said in statement from a family rep. It continues, “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
On April 2, DMX was hospitalized and placed on life support after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was deprived of oxygen for nearly half an hour, which severely impacted his brain. Earlier this week, X went through various tests, but showed no signs of improvement.
X’s family including long-time friend and manager Steve Rifkind has been by his side as well as hundreds of friends and fans who have gathered for prayer vigils outside White Plains Hospital.
The Ruff Ryder icon, rapper and actor was best known for countless classics from the late ‘90’s including his stellar-debut album It’s Dark & Hell Is Hot, the commercial success of … And Then There Was X as well as the hit singles “Party Up (Up In Here)”, “Ruff Ryders Anthem”, “Get At Me Dog”, and many others. DMX has also starred in many Hollywood films including Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and more.
Over the years, DMX’s achievements were overshadowed by run-ins with the law and health issues related to drug addiction. His last stint with rehab was in 2019 following his release from prison after serving a year for tax evasion.
Most recently, DMX resigned with Def Jam and was in the midst of a major comeback with a new album. His last performance was during his 2020 Verzuz battle with Snoop Dogg. Our thoughts and prayers go out to DMX’s family and friends.
