More than seven years after its final episode aired on Adult Swim, Metalocalypse is finally getting a movie.
According to Deadline, the flick — alongside features based on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Venture Bros. — “will get a release worldwide on Blu-ray/DVD and PVOD and electronic-sell-through (EST) with a 90-day exclusive window” before heading to Adult Swim and HBO Max.
The Metalocalypse movie, which is naturally being overseen by series co-creators Brendon Small and Tommy Blancha. Here are the basics of the plot:
“[The story] follows the power-hungry Tribunal as they unveil their secret and deadly ‘Falconback Project.’ This is against a backdrop of a world which is growing embattled in chaos with the menacing Doomstar breaching the Earth’s atmosphere. Meanwhile, the mysterious and twisted dissent of a band member threatens the future of Dethklok. Picking up directly after the heroic rescue of Toki Wartooth: Can Dethklok choose between their egos and the greater good of the world to embark on a gauntlet of dangers that will try their very souls and finally write the song that will be their salvation?”
So it sounds like it’s based on the “final storyline” Small teased a few years back.
It’s not clear when the Metalocalypse movie will be released, but after years of fans clamoring for its, and it becoming public that Adult Swim cancelled the series for no particularly good reason (i.e., the ratings were still great!), this is fantastic news.
We’ll keep you posted, of course!
