When you find that special someone, hold onto them. R&B newcomer Sonta knows this best on single “Selfish,” her first single in two years.
“At first, I was tripping on you / But I’ve been sipping on you / And I’m drunk off one cup / I might get addicted to you / I’ll be your addiction too / And that can’t be good / I wanna be selfish with you,” she sings over a trap-soul production.
“My inspiration for ‘Selfish’ came from a guy I was dating at the time. At first, we were just talking and then I started feeling like I wanted him to myself, because he felt so familiar to me like I knew him before,” Sonta explained to Rated R&B in a statement.
Speaking on the accompanying video, which can be viewed below, Sonta said, “I wanted the video to portray us meeting back in the day, and then meeting again in the present day and falling for each other both times, because I believe that it’s possible. I believe love has no dimension.”
In 2019, Sonta released her project Hood Love, Vol. 1, which included an appearance from fellow Chicago singer Ann Marie (“F****d Up”). The project was preceded by 2018’s In My Feelings, which contained her popular tracks “Crazy Over You” and “You Ain’t Sh*t.”
