The countdown is over. R&B legend Stephanie Mills has made her return to music on Juneteenth, a day celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, with “Let’s Do the Right Thing.” The empowering song was co-written and produced by Marcus Malone.
Mills has said the new song is about “uplifting, motivation, Black excellence, unity, peace, and love for us, by us.” She added in an Instagram video post, “The message is for us as Black people to come together and do the right thing for us, not to look for others to help us or give us a helping hand. We need to help ourselves.”
“Let’s Do the Right Thing” is one of the eight new songs that Mills has co-written with Malone, as she said in a recent interview with D-Nice. She hinted the song is leading up to an upcoming untitled project, which does not yet have a release date.
Since 2015’s “Afraid to Love” duet featuring K-Ci Hailey, the new song is also Mills’ first offering.
