“Would you like to play a game?” Like the rest of his generation, the Gen Z Ghostface seems less interested in movies than interactive pursuits, but this game still has thrills and chills in the new trailer for Scream.
The fifth installment of the meta horror franchise is a sequel to 2011’s Scream 4, as well as the first entry after creator Wes Craven’s 2015 death. Plenty of old friends have returned, led by Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and David Arquette as the oft-stabbed Dewey Riley. Newcomers include Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.
The new trailer opens with a chillingly ancient sound — a ringing, coming from an artifact called a “landline.” The young woman faced with this bizarre phenomenon first consults her smart phone, where a person labelled Amber tells her to answer it. “How did you know my landline was ringing?” she texts back. “Amber?” The answer is hair-raisingly predictable: “This isn’t Amber.” A few minutes later, it turns out that the smart locks in her parents’ home weren’t such a smart idea, and Ghostface makes his violent return.

This isn’t the only murder, and soon news reaches the terrified trio of Sidney, Dewey, and Gale. “It’s happening,” Dewey says in a phone call to Sidney. “Three attacks so far. Do you have a gun?” She responds, “I’m Sidney Prescott. Of course I have a gun.” Soon it’s unclear who is doing the hunting and who is being hunted, and yes, Dewey (almost?) dies again.
