TAKING RISKS WITH DEAR GENRE

Your music is really thoughtful. How long do you contemplate what the subject matter will be?

Thank you. That means a lot to me! Usually, if I think too long and hard about a subject matter, I start over analyzing and the magic is gone. At the end of the writing process is usually when I go back to check for coherency, subject matter, use of language etc..

Context is everything, do you make sure you are clear with your messaging? How do you do that?

Context IS everything. I think it’s sort of an unspoken rule that I push myself to be clear with the message of my songs. By splitting these songs up to be released as singles, I aim to create more time to generate a story & background for each song which may help get the message across more effectively. It sounds pretty basic but lately I’ve been reminded about the impact of a good music video. I think people can anticipate seeing more videos accompanying the music. Looking back, I should have taken the time to focus on videos a long time ago.

Will your fans be surprised with what you have coming up next?

As a music lover, nothing is better than cranking up that newly anticipated track and realizing the artist went in a different direction than what the band has done in the past. I always aim to bring a little surprise to every release through a change in sound.

Who have you been in the mix with on your music?

I haven’t been in the mix with any other artists for the past few years. I think of collaboration often but it happens rarely. I’d like to change that.

What are you daring yourself to do as you get further along in your music?

As I head further along my musical road, I’m daring myself to take risks and try things I’ve never tried before like writing music for other people and playing for hire on instruments that aren’t my strong suit.

How do you feel like your work is shaping your fans who are listening?

In The last few years, I’ve started to put more time into writing meaningful lyrics instead of what I call “filler” lyrics, which are basically subpar demo lyrics that were written to fill the melody but not necessarily ever revised.

Give us all your music!
