Saturday Night Live alum Jason Sudeikis has a major hit on his hands with Ted Lasso, a show about a soccer coach. But in the new Foo Fighters music video, for the song “Love Dies Young,” he plays a completely different kind of coach… specifically, he plays what is clearly intended to be a(n admittedly very broad) parody of Béla Károlyi, the Hungarian Romanian-American gymnastics coach who was accused of physically and psychologically abusing his athletes earlier this year. In this video, he’s a swim coach, presumably to somewhat temper the fact that they’re mining laughs by referencing a highly controversial figure.
Regardless of the touchy subject matter, the video is quite funny. It’s seven-and-a-half minutes long, about three minutes of which is just Sudeikis riffing. Which is truthfully the best part of the clip. Which isn’t to say the song isn’t good — just that it’s never as funny as it is when Sudeikis isn’t center stage.
It does end with a poop joke which I think is also meant as a Caddyshack reference, though, so there’s that.
