Just this weekend, we reported that late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was getting his own action figure, to be released this Thursday, February 10th, on what would’ve been his 60th birthday. Now, it looks like there’s going to be an entire virtual event that will celebrate Cliff’s awesome life, to be hosted that day as well.
In case you’ve decided to start reading MetalSucks with no prior knowledge of metal — and hey, more power to you, Clyde — legendary Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was killed at the age of 24 during a bus accident in Sweden in 1986, where Metallica were touring in support of their album Master of Puppets. The bus carrying the band allegedly hit a patch of black ice, spun, and flipped. Burton, the band’s laid-back punk rocker who famously saw his first big paycheck and talked about how he could finally buy a house and build a life, was crushed, and killed.
Now, according to Blabbermouth, this Thursday, better known as ‘Cliff Burton Day,’ and will be celebrated with an online event focusing on Cliff’s life and legacy. The shindig will be hosted by Nicholas Gomez, with guests including Big Mick (Metallica’s live audio engineer), Metal Joe (leader of the Old Bridge Militia), Gary Holt (Exodus, ex-Slayer), Dan Riley, Brian Lew, Dean Delray, Brian Slagel (founder and head of Metal Blade Records), Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Mike Bordin (Faith No More), Canada Dave and Connie Burton (Cliff’s sister).
The Cliff Burton Day stream is scheduled to kick off at 10pm EST/7pm PST via their YouTube channel. Not only that, but Cliff’s family are also offering a chance to purchase Super7’s action figure and official Cliff Burton Day shirts, which were designed by Charlie Benante himself. All proceeds go towards The Cliff Burton Music Scholarship Fund, so hey, buy a shirt, it’s for a good cause, and why not celebrate Cliff?
Here’s a little preview of what’s to come, followed by the merch post:
