Everyone loves a good comeback, right? Well, it looks like Alexisonfire sure do, and to prove it, they’ve announced Otherness, their first studio album in 13 years, and a new single, “Sweet Dreams of Otherness,” to boot.
The songwriting on “Sweet Dreams of Otherness” borrows elements of desert psychedelic rock to make for a relaxing, catchy song that I assume would also be great on peyote. Not that I would know or anything, just a hunch. According to the band, this song was mostly written by the guitar player:
Says singer George Petit:
“This song was largely [guitarist-vocalist] Dallas [Green’s] brain child, but over the course of writing this record, it became more of a mission statement for the band. It’s kind of about performance and embracing a new found confidence in a state of peculiarity.”
Guitarist Wade MacNeil adds:
“The biggest difference is the space we are all in. We were all really thrilled to make a record, and it was such a respite from what was going on in the world. It felt like life could be beautiful. We were supportive of one another. Everyone was in such a good mood. It was such a treat to be able to do it again.”
So look, I’m not going to pretend I was ever a fan of this band. The fact that I am here covering this band is a concept that would explode 14-year-old-me’s head trying to understand it. But you know what current me knows that 14-year-old me didn’t? My taste in music in high school was ass, which means that I am now free to enjoy whatever fucking music I want without my internal monologue telling me what a poser I am.
Otherness drops June 24th, with preorders starting tomorrow at 11am EST. You view the album artwork and stream “Sweet Dreams of Otherness” below. You can also watch the video premier on YouTube tonight at 6 pm ET.
