Last week saw Swedish occult metal-lite act Ghost release IMPERA, their biggest and most heavily-hyped album yet. The record has been received favorably by fans, including our own Immodest Mouse, who gave the album a 4/5 horn review. Now, the band have been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing the album’s first single “Call Me Little Sunshine” in the Mount View Mausoleum in Altadena, California.
The Kimmel performance teaches us a lot of things about Ghost in 2022. The first is that they can rent out a very fancy mausoleum at the drop of a hat. The second is that they’re definitely trying to reach a broader American audience with a pro-shot set-up like this one; it also makes one notice that the updated Ghouls have less of a satanic Eyes Wide Shut vibe and more of a Slipknot feel, which makes them more approachable to your average old American metalhead.
But mostly what it teaches us is that holy shit, Tobias Forge can barely move in those robes! Like, it’s easy to see him as having subdued unholy command, but the more you watch, the more you think, Jesus, if that guy spins suddenly, the entire thing comes flying off, doesn’t it?
