“Silver Linings” by Dommo

“Silver Linings” is the newest single by R&B singer, Dommo, and the title certainly has literal connotations. Growing up in less than ideal conditions in Ohio, Dommo has split his time between Dallas/Ft. Worth,  and Toledo. He’s also a vocalist for the group known as Gold Standard, who are featured on the track. Thanks to his smooth and gripping voice, he’s really begun to make a name for himself. His recent foray into some solo work has yielded truly fantastic results. “Silver Linings” is a track of great immediacy, and simultaneously, much depth.

Dommo serves so many masters on “Silver Linings,” that he overachieves to an astonishing degree. The seamless and effortless blending of genres is so smooth that it simply can’t be premeditated. We may throw the term, genius, around a little too often, but trust me, it wouldn’t be a matter of pure hyperbole here. This is the type of song that comes out of nowhere and absolutely floors you. Dommo’s voice is a revelation, with a falsetto that most R&B stars would sell their soul for.

At 4 minutes and 1 second, Dommo is able to reach an emotional catharsis, that ultimately feels more episodic than final. The harsh reality of his upbringing, sees him channel his pain into an extraordinary piece of music that is borderline life-changing. To give this type of emotionally raw performance in the studio is somewhat rare. It’s impossible to know if it was done in one take, but the presence of the piece makes it feel as though it were. I was nearly moved to tears, upon my first listen, having had no prior conception of who Dommo is.

The production on “Sliver Linings,” must be praised as well. Everything is so impeccably spaced and perfectly timed. The piano surfaces before you even realize you needed it, and the guitar tracks are angelic in their purity. Most of us will strive for this sort of organic perfection in our respective crafts, but it is rarely achieved. “Silver Linings” is about as close to being perfect as one may be capable of reaching.

It’s hard to predict the trajectory of a track such as this one, as it supersedes anything that contains even a modicum of superficiality. This is goose bump inducing music, that some may simply not be prepared for the subtle emotional fervor of. All things considered, it really doesn’t matter. This song is going to make an impact, regardless of how or where it is promoted. It’s a once in a lifetime work that has the artistic magnitude to stand on its own.

“Silver Linings” is what Hozier set out to achieve with “Take Me To Church.” As extraordinary as that song was, it didn’t leave you in absolute awe, the way that this song does. The experience of listening to “Silver Linings,” for the first time is like momentarily being in a catatonic state of reflection. All preconceived notions of familiarity are shattered when Dommo’s voice enters your head. His submission to the core of his pain and sadness, is a message to all of us, that maybe, just maybe, there’s still hope to be found.
