Janet Jackson and Jennifer Hudson are headed to this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards as notable nominees.
Jackson’s feature film JANET, which premiered this past winter on Lifetime and A&E, is nominated in the newly-established Unscripted category: Best Music Documentary.
The two-night doc chronicled Jackson’s childhood, her rise to superstardom, past relationships, and other career highs and lows. JANET also had interviews with Ciara, Mariah Carey, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others.
Hudson, who landed her own daytime talk show, is up for Best Song for “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home).”
Co-written by Carole King and Jamie Hartman, the gospel-influenced song was penned exclusively for the Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect, in which Hudson starred as the queen of soul.
Earlier this year, “Here I Am” was nominated in the Best Original Song category at the 2022 Golden Globes Awards, and it also made this year’s Oscars Original Song shortlist.
The 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards will be taped live Sunday, June 5, at Los Angeles’ Barker Hangar. The ceremony airs at 8 p.m. EST on MTV.
In other-related news on Jackson, she’s headlining two major summer festivals: Essence Festival of Culture and the Cincinnati Music Festival in July. Jackson continues to work on her highly anticipated album Black Diamond.
As for Hudson, she has had a sweeping award season so far. She won two NAACP Image Awards, one of which was Entertainer of the Year. She also carried home the Entertainment Icon award at the 2022 Urban One Honors.
