Jessie Reyez is back. The Grammy-nominated singer has released “Frauds,” her first single of the year. It features background vocals from Kyle Dion.
The intense song she co-wrote with Tim Suby (Ariana Grande, Travis Scott), who also produced it, is personal. On an unfiltered level, Reyez details a story about a deceitful lover whose shifty antics behind the scenes inflicted great emotional pain.
She viciously sings, “I heard you got a new bitch / Bet she don’t know who she fucking / Oh, you’re just another suit, sucking the flute / Singing that la di da / Making it look cute / But she got no clue what you’re running from / Compulsive lying tendencies / And how you play with alcohol.”
Reyez got candid about the creation of “Frauds” in a lengthy Instagram post. “The day this song came to be, I remember walking into the telly filled to the brim with anger and self-hate because I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t enough,” she described.
“I opened by Dropbox and dove into Tommy’s beat folder searching for a home to lay my emotions to rest. A voice note later, Fraud was born. Shout out to the goat @timsuby You have more talent in your pinky than I do in my body.”
“Fraud” arrives with an artistic music video co-directed by Emma Higgins.
Reyez, who currently is touring alongside Billie Eilish, last released new material in 2020. Before Love Came to Kill Us, the debut album by Reyez, arrived in March 2020. She followed with a deluxe edition featuring three tracks less than two weeks later. Both versions included appearances from Eminem and 6LACK.
The track, “Imported,” featuring 6LACK, went platinum, with over one million equivalent units sold. It marked Reyez’s second release behind “Figures” to achieve this recognition.
Before Love Came to Kill Us made Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2020 list.
Earlier this spring, Reyez teamed with Kehlani for the song “More Than I Should.” It’s taken from Kehlani’s most recent album Blue Water Road.
