Steve Lacy has released “Bad Habit,” the second peek into his upcoming sophomore album, Gemini Rights.
The track starts with a jangly electric guitar-based background and ends with a mellow acoustic guitar. Both fit the shifts in Lacy’s laid-back vocal phrasing, as he is confronted with a hot tip that a particular person from his past had feelings for him. While he had a hunch that something was up with this interest, he seemingly didn’t see it going beyond the friend line.
Even having been served with this surprise notice, Lacy isn’t entirely sure what to do with it or this individual. He has one idea, singing, “Let’s f*ck in the back of the mall / Lose control / Go stupid, go crazy, babe.” The overall track is necessary for inspiring summer romance.
“Bad Habits” comes with a music video directed by Julian Klincewicz. He is seen in solo shots, dancing aimlessly against flickering multi-colored backgrounds.
The new track comes two weeks after Lacy issued “Mercury,” the lead single from Gemini Rights. It also supports the album’s release date announcement. Gemini Rights is due on July 15 via RCA Records.
Lacy’s follow-up to Grammy-nominated album Apollo XXI comprises ten songs, including the two mentioned above. “I don’t want to take people’s lives. I want them to make a decision to want to keep playing it again. I try my best to make my music to where you want to do that again,” he shared with Zane Lowe of Apple Music about his tracklisting lengths.
Apollo XXI was released on May 27, 2019. The album included the songs “N Side” and “Playground,” the last of which has a corresponding music video.
Lacy contributed to Brent Faiyaz’s upcoming album Wasteland. The previously-shared song is titled “Gravity” and features Tyler, the Creator.
Over the last year, Lacy has collaborated with artists such as Fousheé and Ravyn Lenae.
