Robin Thicke has joined forces with rapper Yo Gotti for his new single “Brown Liquor.” Thicke co-wrote the intoxicating tune with Rook Monroe and co-produced it with Rich Skillz.
In an interview with Crisco Kidd Block Party, Thicke revealed that he and Yo Gotti worked on “Brown Liquor” a few years ago. “I’ve been holding onto it for a while because it didn’t really fit my last album,” he shared. “My last album was called On Earth, and in Heaven and it was about the people that are here and the people that have moved on. It was dedicated to my father, who passed away, and Andre Harrell, my mentor who passed away.”
He added, “But right now, we’ve got the new season of The Masked Singer and I got my new haircut (laughs). I’m feeling sassy right now. I need my Yo Gotti record to get out there and I’m going to follow Gotti to the top of the charts, hopefully.”
“Brown Liquor” follows Thicke’s Rapsody-assisted track “Day One Friend,” which was released in February. The song was a tribute to Harrell.
“The song is dedicated to @AndreHarrell, my mentor and day one friend who taught me everything he knew and made my soul richer, my life better and my journey much more fun and fabulous!” Thicke wrote in an Instagram caption.
“Day One Friend” arrived a year after Thicke released his album, On Earth, and in Heaven. The 11-track album centers around themes of hope, optimism and love.
Most of my songs and most of my time spent in my head are about love. After so much loss, it made me leave the pain behind and focus on how much I have still here with me — how much I can give to them and get back from them, as far as love goes,” Thicke told Rated R&B in an interview.
On Earth, and in Heaven followed Thicke’s 2014 album, Paula.
It’s unclear if “Brown Liquor” will appear on an upcoming project or if it’s a standalone single.
