R&B newcomer Jamal Lamont has released his debut EP, Sirens.
For his inaugural release, he teamed with his frequent collaborator Mental Kryptonite. The three-track project features additional production from Roksana Habibi and Anderson Hargraves.
The sweetly serene balladry of “Want You Around” will make you melt at Lamont’s sultry romantic vocals and his longing to be close to his love. The long-breathed croons throughout and the emphasis on the word “Magic” recalls a tenderly wholesome John Legend.
After shooting the merman-inspired music video for “Want You Around,” which will debut on Oct. 25, Lamont came up with the title Sirens.
“The director Allison A. Waite pitched the idea, explaining that sirens were mythological creatures of both genres, stemming back from many different origins. We both thought it was genius,” recalls Lamont.
“With Sirens being alluring, irresistible, inevitable and beautiful, I knew this would be the perfect name for the EP — especially as they’re singers too, which is personal to me, and I love the element of water.”
As much as Lamont could have recorded present-day R&B clichés, he doesn’t give it a second thought and goes against deep romantic drama and toxic sensibilities.
In exchange, he pours so much of himself into each one of these songs, sounding unapologetically vulnerable and sentimental.
