Sh*t That Comes Out Today – February 24, 2023

Wow, February went fast. At least you’ve got another 50 weeks before you have to think about the fact that you’re alone again.

Host

IX (Nuclear Blast)

Paradise Lost members Greg Mackintosh and Nick Holmes try their hand at darkwave with Host and the results are a resounding success. As our review stated, “when I listen to IX, I feel like I’m back home – sixteen years old, ordering a snakebite at the bar at the Limelight and then unknowingly walking into a bathroom filled with pocket mirrors and razor blades.” Available now.

Insomnium

Anno 1696 (Century Media)

Looking to Scandinavia’s history of witch hunts for inspiration on their latest album, Anno 1696, Insomnium tell the story over their signature sound. There’s melodic death metal, doom and gothic leanings aplenty. There are also a few folk influences there but Anno 1696 won’t throw any surprises at faithful Insomnium fans. It’s available through Gimme Radio.

Steel Panther

On the Prowl (Steel Panther Inc)

If you’re a fan of Steel Panther’s antics, feel free to read our latest editorial and tell us that we don’t understand the spirit of heavy metal. Otherwise, enjoy the band’s latest ode to moms and the days when cocaine was safe to do at parties.

Stöner

Boogie to Baja (Heavy Psych Sounds)

If you’re not familiar with Stöner, it’s stoner rock from ex-Kyuss members Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri. It sounds exactly like what you think it does: desert rock riffs, upbeat drumming, lighthearted vocals. Crack open a beer, roll a joint and call your high school friends. This is good-time music and it’s for sale at Gimme Metal.

Venomous Concept

The Good Ship Lollipop (Decibel)

To celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band, Venomous Concept—featuring Napalm Death’s Shane Embury and Brutal Truth’s Kevin Sharp—changed things up, heading in a more punk rock direction. The end result is The Good Ship Lollipop and we’d say the results came out pretty damn well. Decibel Magazine’s record label is putting out the album as their first official release and you can also purchase it through Gimme Metal.
